None of them are really ideal for belaying, they are more geared towards active use as the wind will cut through all of them without a shell on top. The Uberlayer is a better breather than competition like the Atom LT or Rab Strata and a better insulator than the similarly breathable Nano-Air. So the Uberlayer is probably about 1/3 warmer and about 1/3 heavier than the Nano-Air, and probably doesn't breath quite as well - but would be more appropriate in colder weather. Not all that warm though - for New England Winters I imagine you would want something warmer. Last spring, the Ascendant Hoody popped onto the line-up, as the Uberlayer’s lightweight little sister. It is warmer than its breathable competitor, the Patagonia Nano Air (60 g/m2 PrimaLoft Gold). Many of our testers felt it was comfortable to wear in weather ranging from freezing to 60F. Stuffs into a pocket with a clip loop as well, and has drop in pockets inside which is a nice touch. The Outdoor Research Uberlayer is one of the warmest breathable jackets we tested and is constructed with 98 g/m2 of Polartec Hi-Pile Alpha insulation. The Outdoor Research Ascendant Hoody’s breathability and degree of warmth make it a legitimate four-season shell for summer backpacking, shoulder-season dayhiking and climbing, backcountry skiing, mountaineering, bike commuting, or throwing on after you finish a trail run. It is a really well done light synthetic jacket. The stretch panels give it great mobility, but the wind can cut through them when it is blowing. Same light insulation where it is insulated. The Cathode is basically a Nano-Puff with light softshell panels under the sleeves and on the sides. ![]() ![]() (The Superlayer seems similar but not the same as the Uberlayer).
